What have I learnt about using these Hardware and Software Technologies?

The aspects I have learnt and established whilst using these variation of software and hardware technologies are how to publish, manipulate, edit and create a music magazine (contents, article and cover page). I have understood and learnt the progression and stages through creating and using the technologies to produce to forms and conventions of other existing selling products.

Through using a Fuji Film Finepix S1500 Camera I have worked on my ability to photo-shoot a model/cover star in different styles, angles and using creative scenery props to create a visual and realistic cover star/s for the cover page of a music magazine working to and against forms and conventions to make a magazine that a particular audience would potentially want to purchase.

Using I- Mac 2GHz Intel Duo Core 2 Processor (3GB memory) I have learned and grasped the ability to work with to produce and create a product using a faster and more productive processor to manage with the large data capacity used in creating the product to a high standard.

Using Adobe Photo-shop CS5 (Digital image manipulation) I have captured the futuristic and visualized the ability to create and design a product that is a suitable to a particular audience and looks presentable and visual. This software has helped the production of the magazine in the realistic features and techniques and publishing facilities that enabled me to work with to produce a more than satisfactory end product.

Adobe In Design CS3 (Desktop publishing) this software helped me capture and fixate my article for the music magazine, following by the forms and conventions that apply for music magazines.

I used a USB device to save my work as a back up on just incase my work deleted or failed to save on the the Apple Mac computer, and I also used the USB device to work on my contents page, cover page and article for my music magazine at my Toshiba intel core processor laptop at home and work on the deadlines and research towards my music magazine at home. This device was useful and helped me towards accomplishing work.

What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why?

“What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why?

The type of media institution I would like to distribute and publicise my music magazine isBauer. Bauer founded in 1875 is a Hamburg, German based company whom specialise in publishing and broadcasting in multifunctional media groups. Bauer has around 6,400 employees, serves in Europe. USA, China, and Russia and has a revenue of €2.129 Billion Euro (2010), they publicise and distribute around 38 million magazines a week. The Bauer Publishing Group comprises 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries, as well as TV and radio stations. The Bauer media publishing group expanded to become Britain’s biggest publishing group with over 100 magazine brands worldwide. http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/brands

Bauer is the magazine company I would like to distribute my music magazine as this company will have the ability to distribute my music magazine around the world which will increase sales and appeal to a huge variety of audience and become more successful and known around the world and have the potential to become a worldwide selling music magazine.

“How does your media product represent particular social groups?”

I wanted media product to represent a down to earth edgy cover star/s who have a real passion for music and tell their true stories to inspire people who want to achieve and get somewhere in the industry. In order to do this I re-created real life stories that have taken place to include in my article to inspire those by telling their story and I used the use of props for example Guitars headphones, and microphones to represent their love of music.

I used a specific theme of colours throughout my music magazine these were blue, black, white, red and yellow this is because it symbolizes and stands for a variety aspects and ties in with my music magazine and represents different social groups coming together, as it was not too bright and in your face and it was not too dark and dull. I think this made it look more upbeat representative toward the genre and the reader/s. My cover star/s weren’t too over dressed and more natural to appeal to particular social groups as existing magazine cover star/s more picture perfect and represented as the ‘perfect model’ where as I wanted my music magazine to show the real person and convey reality therefore the readers aren’t over expecting on how the cover star/s look. My music magazine features a wider range of artists therefore has no particular genre therefore appeals to particular socials groups worldwide, i have cover star/s from different origins and backgrounds so there is not a bias audience  for my music magazine.

Q&A Article Write-up

Q&A: ‘My rise to fame hasn’t been easy’

CMA speaks exclusively to 3 time grammy award, 5 time AMA award winner Destiny Hope about her astonishing rise to fame; her past, present and future plans.

Q: Lets go back to basics; what first interested you in music?

A: [Laughs] Where do i start? I first recall my love and passion for music when I was 4, my parents used to always listen to the radio or have different music on, and you’d always find me singing along and dancing round the room. I guess I’d say it started then, It’s always brightened up my day and been a part of me growing up and brought me back to life when I was at my lowest.

Q: Wow! That’s dedication for you! When did you get your first instrument? Did you take any lessons?

A: I got my first instrument when I was aged 5 which was a piano, and I started taking lessons at 4 1/2, they figured if I started taking lessons before I got my first instrument, it would give me an insight into what I wanted to play.  My parents saved up a lot for it and they wanted to get it knowing It wasn’t just a phase of music and that I would make use out of it. I then took vocal lessons at aged 6.

Q: That’s true, why start vocal lessons later than piano lessons?

A: I started piano lessons first because I always wanted to learn to play an instrument and I figured the if i learnt to play an instrument first then it makes it easier to put music to lyrics when I became for familiar and confident with my song writing. I never stopped singing along to music though, I never stopped that [Laughs].

Q: You knew what you wanted from a very young age then? Do you play any other instruments?

A: Yes I did [Smiles] I knew what I wanted and my parents helped that happen and supported me through from then and still do now. I do play other instruments yes, I took classes in guitar at 7 and drums at 10, I figured if I learnt a variety rather than just one instrument then I’d have more of a feel for the music and the genre that suited my voice more. It helped me in putting lyrics to the beats and the rhythm which really inspired me when producing music.

Q: When did you start writing your own songs then?

A: I Started writing my own songs aged 5 1/2 when I was some part through my piano lessons because I found a connection with the music I was performing and the lyrics just came to me whenever I’d sit and play the tunes that I’d learnt. Sometimes I’d find myself experimenting with the notes on the piano and writing them down in a book whenever I got a rhythm going on, and express myself in putting words to rhythm and find myself with a scripted song.

Q: That sounds beautiful. When you started high-school did you ever find yourself running out of time to spend with your friends? or too much of a hectic life style?

A: No. When I Started high school I got involved in all the musical productions they’d put on, sometimes I’d myself in the orchestra playing either guitar, piano or drums if they needed the extra help or sometimes I’d do vocals. I met and spent time with friends who shared the same interests as I did through High-school that way really, and I never let my music get in the way of school work I set myself schedules to get everything done and not fall behind. I still had a social life friends would come round mine and do homework or experiment with music together for fun because that how we liked it. There were occasions where we’d go to town or cinema and things too.

Q: Wow! You sound like you had a very hectic life! but it’s good to know you balance things out well too. So when did you first get recognised?

A: [Laughs] Yeah that right. Well, I  set up a you tube account and I was slightly hesitant on whether or not to broadcast a video of me singing for a while, but my friend recording me singing round hers and posted it on her YouTube account in which I had no idea about and it got quite a few views and requests to try out other songs. She showed me what she’d done a couple of days later and I was shocked that people liked my music and requested for more. So I recorded some more music in my time and my friend put a link to my YouTube page on the video and the comments came flooding in. The people on YouTube decided they wanted to ‘Get me recognized’ and broadcasted my channel on more social networking and widespread. Then the June 19th at around 12pm UK time I got a call from an american record producer who listened to my music and it kind’ve went from there really it was so sudden and went so fast but I enjoyed it and thanked all m YouTube subscribers for what they’d helped me achieve. I still do YouTube videos now.

Q: That’s amazing, It’s surprising how different it is from reality isn’t it? How you settling into the new lifestyle? How do you balance it with your old life? friends?

A: I sure is a hell of a lot different but I wouldn’t change it for the world! I love it! and I’m so privelleleged that the one thing that’s always been such a huge part of my life I get to share it with the world and have it as a job. I couldn’t imagine my life without music it’s the one thing that describes who I am and what I stand for as a person. My social life is so much more precious to me now than it was before because the time I spend with my family and friends is so limited to publicity that It makes it that much more special and I’m thankful to everyone in my life right now. I give my friends and family free backstage tickets to all my shows if they can make it and they love it they come with me to meet and greets sometimes too. My one main best friend had a gap year from UNI and she came on my world tour with me for half the year and we went out to see the sights she wanted to go and experience in the day then went for rehearsals and concerts in the afternoon/night. We had such a great time it was amazing. My family would’ve come too If they could get the time off work.

Q: You balance your time out well then, between social life and music career. It hasn’t been all easy for you, getting to where you are now though has it? You recently spoke out about your past in which you were hospitalized for sixth months?

A: Yeah I mean, we could sit here all day and talk about how lucky I am to have been blessed with where I am now and how far I’ve come but no It hasn’t all been  highs I’ve been through a lot to get where I am today. I chose to speak out about my traumas to show others that no matter what they go through and how hard life gets there’s always a way out, and you can always make it through just believe in yourself and speak out don’t keep everything bottled up.  [gets teary; Hands tissues] I thought I was going to die when I was hospitalized for 6 months at some points it was fatal but I was lucky enough to fight through it and I’m so privelliaged to still be alive. I just thank my god I made it through and my family and friends have been my rock through it all.

Q: You’ve had it quite tough I see; You also spoke out about bullying when you were younger, how did you manage with that?

A: I did yeah, I mean I went through stages of bullying when I was younger around 10, I mean we all have out insecurities and I was always a shy kid, I was never one of the popular groups around school I just got on with what I was told and lost in my music at home. I guess I was just one of the unfortunate ones where my insecurities shone through and they took advantage. It knocks your confidence hugely and you feel so isolated and alone I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, I hated going to school I ran home everyday and cried myself to sleep. My parents took me out of school in the end and moved me to another school, they could see how much it was effecting me, my grades went down at school I used to fake being ill to get away but I’d just get sent texts, they’d make Facebook pages about me and everything. I couldn’t get away from it.

Q: That’s horrible! So how did you finally erase the bad people in your life? When did the bullying stop?

A: It got to the stage where I took an overdose one night where it got so bad and landed up in hospital, I guess that’s where those people most important in my life realised how bad it had effected me. I landed up in a rehabilitation centre where they would keep a close eye on me constantly to the stage I felt completely incapable, I guess it was all for the right reasons but at the time it felt so patronizing. It was then I knew I had to make a change, pick myself back up and make a fresh start for myself, I guess my fault was letting everything get this bad. I deleted all my social networking sites, and got a new phone and sim in which only my family had my number just incase they needed to contact me and my parents home-schooled me for a while until they could find me a new school in which I felt more safer. I did make new accounts on social networking a few years later but I knew I had to be gain my confidence back up in myself before anything else. I’ve lost all trust in a lot of people due to my life situations, and it’s a lot harder for me to trust anyone, I just wanted people to know my story and to know they can make a change.

Q: Wow! You’re a strong person, and that shows through your experiences. What advice have you got for young people out there that are going though this? or that have aspirations like you?

A: My advice to anyone going through issues like I’ve experienced is to confide in someone whether that be a friend, parents, family, I know that’s easier said than done but bottling up your emotions is never the answer. By telling someone you they could help you get through your issues, I mean everyone in life has their insecurities that’s only natural but don’t let your insecurities prevent you from achieving the very best in life, no one deserves to be bullied and everyone has the potential to be who they want to be. Life is full of ups and downs I mean if everyone had the ‘perfect life’ no one would get anywhere it’s a part of who you are and like Kelly Clarkson said “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and that’s a true saying.

Q: So, swiftly moving on. What’s plans for the future? We’ve heard rumors of a tour? Is this true?

A: [Laughs] Well, I can’t give too much details away but there are some new faces, new experiences and a whole lot of fun stuff going on some time soon and later this year, so keep your eyes peeled for unexpected challenges going on. I am so excited about this year everything seems to be on a high for this year and I’m excited for everything happening. As for the tour rumors I can’t say too much just yet but I’ll leave that up to y’all to keep guessing, I will be talking more about this later on in the year. All I’m going to say is there are going to be a few collaborations and aiming to produce a new album soon mid this year or start of next. There’s also some news coming soon which I can’t repeat just yet but it’s just full of surprises this year.

Q: Sounds exciting! Do you receive and reply to a lot of fan mail? Tweets?

A: I do yeah, I mean I try to reply to as many of my twitter followers as I can but it’s hard you know I Can’t be on twitter all day so there may be some tweets I don’t get quite round to seeing or I may miss when I’m scrolling down my mentions and I do apologise for that, but I do try as reply to as many as I can. As for fan mail well I do tend to get a fair amount of fan mail I have them sent to my private studio where I visit nearly every day to weather It just be passing through to check on the studio and collect the letter/s or recording in there. I think it’s more privacy to get them sent to my studio rather than having loads of people know my address and sit outside my house know because it can get slightly intimidating but yeah I do reply to all my fan mail that I receive, so if you don’t get a reply within say 4/5 months it’s probably because I haven’t received it.

Q: Thank you for your time; due  to timing this interview is slowly coming to an end, so we’d like to wish you all the best this year and keep us informed on the new surprises within the year?

A: Thank you so much, and yes I will be sure to keep you informed thank you for having me.

Planning Your Double Page Article

Some ideas to think about and get you started:

1. Decide upon your style of article; interview Q&A or feature/ review / biographic feature/ opinion piece?

For my article I am aiming for my article to feature a Q&A interview feature and or a review style and layout to make it more unique and to my own style that works and appeals to the target audience.

2. Look at some existing examples in that particular style; what are the key features? how could you adopt/develop these features and conventions in your work.

The features that work in other music magazines that i would like to portray in my music magazine article include:

  • Themed colours that stand out and work well.
  • Big, bold and resolute fonts a mixture but not too many fonts (see picture 1) that stand out and immediately grab the reader’s attention.
  • Sectioned out columns that suit well with the theme and tie in.
  • Large imagine of the main artists however some short shot collage theme images placed nicely and sufficiently on the page.
  • The piece of text and page number at the bottom of the page.
  • Headlined text that work well with theme and stand out the reader.

fonts

classicalmusic_article

Although this is not a music magazine article, this design of the article has a good design and layout in which I would like to portray some of the ideas and designs that are used effectively. The choice of colours work well and stand out to the reader which is what I am aiming for in my music magazine article and it’s a little edgy and works sufficiently.

double-page-spread double page spread

3. Get it in context! You’ve already designed a cover and a contents page; how does your article follow on from these?

I intend to stick to the same theme, colours and styles to my contents page and music magazine cover however I will also add a slight edge to my music magazine article and style the layout in a new style which follows the forms and conventions set out in the contents page and cover page.

4. How will the article fit into your magazine?  Think about the house style – colour, fonts, layouts / audience – mode of address?

5. What will your angle be?  Why have you featured this particular artist or band? Is there a bias or point of view to the article?

6. Think about your headline. What does it need to do? What will it tell the reader?

7. Think about the quotes you will use? Why these particular words and what effect will the have on the readers interpretation of the interview?

8. Images – think about the photography you will need for the article – style/number of images/ colours/ locations/ angles/models required?

9. Devise your layout on paper. Sketch out alternatives.

10. Try and write the article first in a Word Processor – it will give you a clearer idea of the style and layout of the final double page feature.

11. Mock up the layout on Indesign once you’ve planned it all.

12. Finally you can pull all the elements (photography, copy, quotes, headlines, graphics etc) together.

Just like this music magazine I used a simular layout  to this music magazine as i used my main cover artist to fill up the whole cover page.  However, with my music magazine I added a free poster in the top right corner and shortened the length of the masthead to fit in with the cover page. I also displayed my barcode in the botto, right hand corner where as in this ‘Billboard’ music magazine its in the bottom left.
